Trauma emotional response to an event or series of events that are deeply distressing, overwhelming, or perceived as seriously harmful or life-threatening. Trauma occurs when a person's ability to cope is overwhelmed, leaving them with a sense of helplessness and a shattered sense of safety. The response to trauma is highly individual and symptoms can vary according to the individual. While many people experience strong emotions like fear, sadness, and anger after a traumatic event, most will recover with time and support. However, for some, these effects are longer-lasting and can lead to mental health conditions such as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), complex trauma, anxiety, or depression.

Trauma is treatable with consistent psychological therapy. There are a range of therapies available to treat trauma. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is an evidenced based treatment for trauma. This therapy involves a person gently recalling the traumatic memory while a therapist guides them through bilateral stimulation, such as eye movements or tapping. This process helps the brain reprocess the memory, reducing its emotional intensity. At Project Self Psychology, we have undertaken comprehensive training in EMDR for trauma.
